What are the differences between engineered and solid wood floors?

Engineered floors are generally easier and less expensive to install, and their layered construction handles changes in moisture and temperature far better than solid wood. Solid wood is not recommended below grade, where it can warp.

Oil vs. lacquer: what is the difference, and which is better?

A lacquer (UV-cured polyurethane) finish forms a hard protective layer on top of the wood. It suits heavy traffic and needs less upkeep, but scratches show more and a worn spot exposes bare wood. An oil finish soaks into the wood, keeps a more natural look and stays protective as the surface wears, but needs regular maintenance. Neither is universally better; the right choice depends on how the floor will be lived on.

How often can engineered wood floors be refinished?

It depends on the thickness of the wear layer and on the refinisher. Each refinishing removes roughly 0.75–1 mm of wood, so a 4 mm wear layer can typically be refinished two to three times. Textured (wire-brushed) surfaces may change character when refinished.

Do these floors need time to acclimate?

Yes. Engineered wood is more stable than solid, but acclimation is still recommended. Open the cartons and let air circulate in the installation space for 3–5 days, and use a moisture meter to judge whether more time is needed.

Can these floors be used over radiant heat?

Yes. Engineered wood is well suited to radiant heat: the cross-laminated construction resists movement, and a floating installation leaves room for the heating tubes. Follow the installation guide for temperature limits.

Can these floors be used in bathrooms and kitchens?

Yes, with proper care. Engineered wood is acceptable in bathrooms but not where there are tubs or showers. UV lacquer is very durable; oil finishes are easier to spot-repair and work well in kitchens. Use mats near the sink, stove and refrigerator, wipe spills promptly, and use the recommended WOCA care products.

Are all colors available in every size?

Each color is distinct, and available widths and constructions vary by color — see the Collections page for what is offered in each. We aim to keep every size stocked; custom sizes can be requested.

Are custom orders available?

Yes. Email contact@decomaterials.com to discuss custom widths, lengths, finishes or patterns.

How do I maintain my floors?

Follow the cleaning instructions for your floor's finish. The Care & Maintenance guide on the Resources page covers routine cleaning, spot repair and the recommended products, or contact us by phone or email.

Do I need to buy extra flooring to account for waste? How much?

Yes. Extra material is normal and recommended to cover cut-offs, installer experience, the installation method and any boards you choose not to use for knots or grain. We recommend ordering 7–12% extra; herringbone and diagonal layouts sit at the top of that range.
